S5, EP11 -Building Your Tribe: How to Build Meaningful Relationships

Notes

Why does it feel harder than ever to build meaningful friendships and real connection as adults?

In this episode of the Why Not Today? Podcast, Leslie talks about loneliness, entrepreneurship, intentional community, and why meaningful relationships no longer happen as naturally as they once did.

Inspired by conversations at the Loudoun County Economic Development Summit and a powerful podcast episode from Mel Robbins and Kasley Killam, this conversation explores what it actually takes to build deeper relationships, stronger community, and a meaningful tribe in today’s world.

Leslie shares how connection used to happen more organically through workplaces, neighborhoods, schools, churches, and everyday “water cooler conversations.” Today, many people work remotely, run businesses alone, communicate mostly through text and email, and spend more time consuming content than participating in community.

As a result, isolation has quietly become normal for many adults, especially entrepreneurs.

This episode explores why building meaningful relationships now requires intentional action, repeated interaction, consistency, curiosity, and the willingness to go first.

Leslie also references the Harvard Study of Adult Development, one of the longest running studies on happiness and health, which found that meaningful relationships are one of the strongest predictors of happiness, resilience, and longevity.

Throughout the episode, Leslie shares practical examples and personal stories about intentionally creating connection through networking groups, workshops, volunteering, masterminds, community events, and simply being willing to start conversations.

One of those intentional moments led to meeting longtime friend and business connection Maggie Parker, proving that many meaningful relationships begin simply by showing up and engaging with the people around you.

This episode is especially relevant for:
• Entrepreneurs and solopreneurs feeling isolated
• Women craving deeper connection and community
• People navigating remote work or major life transitions
• Anyone wanting more meaningful relationships and friendships
• Business owners looking for accountability and encouragement

Highlights from this episode:
• Why adult friendships feel harder than ever
• The loneliness epidemic and its impact on mental health and business
• The importance of repeated interaction and becoming a regular somewhere
• Better questions that create deeper conversations
• Why follow up matters more than most people realize
• How social courage helps build meaningful relationships
• Why intentional community matters for momentum and growth
• The connection between consistency and stronger relationships

This week’s challenge:
• Reach out to one person
• Attend one event or gathering
• Follow up with someone new
• Introduce two people
• Invite someone into a conversation

Sometimes your tribe finds you naturally. More often, you build it intentionally through small acts of courage and consistent action.

If this episode encouraged you, share it with someone in your tribe or someone who may need encouragement and connection right now.
