This past weekend, I went to the beach with my mom and sister, and it was exactly what I needed.
We spent time walking along the water, eating great food, and catching up with friends we do not see often enough. It was simple, relaxed, and full in the best way. At one point, I paused, looked down, and noticed my toes in the sand. I was completely present, not thinking about work, not checking my phone, just there in the moment.
That feeling did not happen by accident.
If you are an entrepreneur, you know one of the best parts about owning your own business is the freedom. You do not have a boss telling you when to start or stop. You can design your days, set your schedule, and create a life that works for you.
But there is another side to that freedom.
Without a boss, there are no built-in boundaries. There is no clear end to the workday. There is always one more email to send, one more idea to follow up on, one more task that could move the business forward. Before you know it, the flexibility you wanted turns into working more than ever.
I realized this early on, and I knew something had to change.
Creating a Reset on Purpose
A long time ago, I decided I needed to create my own boundaries. Not by limiting my work, but by building in intentional time away from it.
That is where my “toes in the sand” rhythm came from.
About once a month, I step away for two or three days. I usually go somewhere near the water, although it is not really about the location. It is about the space. During that time, I intentionally do not work. I give myself permission to pause, to think, to rest, and to simply be.
It is not a reward for finishing everything. It is a reset that allows me to keep going.
What Happens When You Step Away
Every time I take this kind of break, I notice the same shift.
I come back clearer. The noise is gone, and I can see what actually matters. Decisions feel easier. Ideas come more naturally. I feel energized instead of drained.
This morning was no different.
I was up early, sitting at my desk, feeling refreshed and ready to move forward. The work did not feel overwhelming. It felt exciting again.
That is the difference a real break can make.
The Work Gets Better When You Pause
There is a common belief that stepping away slows you down or puts you behind. In my experience, the opposite is true.
When you never step away, everything starts to blur together. You lose perspective. You spend time on things that are not as important as they feel in the moment. You make decisions from a place of pressure instead of clarity.
Stepping away creates space.
And in that space, you think better, lead better, and ultimately grow your business in a more intentional way.
The break is not separate from the work. It is part of the system that makes the work better.
What Is Your Version of “Toes in the Sand”?
It does not have to be a beach.
Your version of “toes in the sand” might be a weekend in the mountains, a day completely offline, or even a few hours set aside where you disconnect and give yourself room to think.
The location is not the point.
The intention is.
If you have been feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or constantly “on,” it may not be because you need to do more. It may be because you need to step away.
Create the space. Protect it. Treat it like part of your business, not something extra.
Because sometimes the most productive thing you can do is pause long enough to come back ready.
Why not today?
